The Spanish Government has recognised bullfighting as “an artistic discipline and cultural product” and has made the Ministry of Culture responsible for its development and protection.
Commenting on the decision, Florian Leppla, founder of Bye-Bye Bullfighting, the campaign to end bullfighting worldwide, said:
“This appalling decision by the Spanish Government is bad for animal welfare and, moreover, it is against the will of the majority of the Spanish people who are opposed to bullfighting.
“Bullfighting is a cruel blood sport which has nothing to do with culture. It is not economically viable and has only survived on subsidies from the Spanish and EU-taxpayer for years.”
“The decision is a clear PR stunt from the Zapatero government who just annouced snap elections for this November. It is sad that Zapatero has bowed to the pressure of the bullfighting industry that has heavily lobbied for legal protection.
